MA Graduate Fashion Collection

Anna-Mari Leppisaari’s MA Graduate fashion collection is an exploration of fashion through textile and surface design, where form and aesthetics follow the woven and embroidered fabric.

The collection is inspired by Alinka Echeverria’s photographs that portray Mexican pilgrims carrying colourful and vivid handcrafted shrines that were built using a variety of techniques and materials. The experimental use of materials and techniques, as well as the collision of contemporary style and folklore motifs in these images became an inspiration for mixing and bonding of materials and patterns in the collection.

An essential element in the project is sustainability, which is approached through the appreciation of high-quality, unique materials. The weaving methods and restrictions of the loom strongly affect the style and form of the clothing. Garments are designed on the loom with the aim of creating as little waste as possible. The ability to control and influence the entire design process and the qualities of a garment, starting from yarn to finished product, creates strong individual aesthetics and value base.
